Micro Collage City
Program: Urban
Architect: Ali Nazari
Design Year: 2022
Area: 17.500 m2

The morphology of cities is not separate from their topology, history, social transformations, developments. Some of these changes always remain in the context and their effect can be discovered by reviewing the city.

The project begins with a morphological observation of the city in addition to grids and extruded buildings to the city. From our point of view, the morphology of the city is an abstract collage of the past, present, and future, which consists of three layers:
First layer: organic conditions of routes and topography
Second layer: urban grid with extruded buildings
Third layer: collective programs and natural spaces

After a morphological study on the city, we realized that the project could represent the city in three dimensions. The citizens of the city of Jeonnam can walk toward a new city in a square with a high degree of freedom, unceasing and indefinitely. We consider architecture as a city.

Away from the everyday routine of this city, in one of the administrative areas of the city, due to the combination of the layers of the city with architecture, a different and special square is born. The main goal of this project is to produce connections and interactions with the city and create new urban concepts in a phenomenon called collage city, a micro-city in a metropolitan.

The micro-city collage creates a representation of the city of Jeonnam. However, the juxtaposition of layering of smaller objects in a complete sense (rather than a totalitarian (absolute) approach) allows the city to avoid the inevitable finality of urban politics. A postmodern – unregulated – combination of memories, altered content, recycled concepts, metamorphosis, redefinition, etc., allowing the city to build and read itself and shape its ideas from artificial pieces. Micro Collage City offers situations in which multiple qualities, all at the same time, are interconnected and transforming.

The city’s inspiration, morphology, and structure of collective programs and spaces are defined as an open collage structure. Existing events and interactions of a city are divided into two main categories: urban services and green areas for the public. These subdivided into museums, parks, entertainment, sports, library, music and theater venues, cinemas-tech, public gathering places, and workshops, children’s games space, cultural events, etc. are positioned in the three-dimensional grid structure and organic path. This project is a re-design of the public space activities.
The script of this space is written free!
Active and dynamic design, as well as creating different potentials in this place, has created free space. The events of the city are embodied in the buildings of the project. The relation between humans’ actions and emotions in opposition to the «flexible space» makes this space a memorable and imaginative space. This micro-city will grow over time and will gain self-awareness and memory. A phenomenon that can penetrate the city and the minds of citizens and belong to the future.

The collage approach is an approach in which objects are forcibly or seductively removed from their context on behalf of urban programs, and their meaning is re-designed as objects. This proposed approach is shaped with respect to two critical issues, the utopia or the tradition-past or future.

These objects can represent the city›s culture, history, nature, or social spaces, in elitist or popular opinions. Whether interpreted from the past centuries, or the present and contemporary daily life or the future, they are considered as important issues in the city. This collage, to some extent, adapts the compositional appearance and the conditions of independence. Although the collage of the city is more hospitable and exciting than the city and modern architecture, it, like any other human institution, cannot pretend to be «entirely» hospitable. Because collage is a technique for using things simultaneously and instability and change. This project has become a dynamic city, unstoppable, and uncertain.

It feeds the reality of change, movement, action, and date and time. As an example of what these pieces could be, the objects discovered and a historical and existing piece, green space or event and collective spaces in the city, and imagining spaces for the future. Some might argue that contemporary cities, because of their development over time, are already a collage of historical fragments and periods. However, the nature of the collage city is that the pieces are selected strategically and with high connectivity to allow the city to grow and evolve, leaving the rules that remain in cities that have such pieces.

We do not want to have an ideal understanding of the city in our minds, but this project is proposed to re-read contemporary cities in a new way and represent it in an open urban square.

Design:
This project consists of grids with the same width and length of 10 meters and a height of 5 meters, which are meant to represent the structure of the Jeonnam urban grid in three dimensions. The decentralized structure is the same, and the organic path also connects the grid structure to the city by Central Park.

The route represents the organic structures and biomorphic lines of the city of Jeonnam. The path as an object for citizens’ PROMENADE. In the meantime, the objects are the programs interacting with this project are the representation of the spaces in the city. The axes drawn into the project site represent important elements in the metropolitan area, such as a historical region called (naju-si) as a museum, library as an educational space and workshops and digital library, green spaces representing the green hills in the city and public places for the amphitheater overlooking the lake, and a music hall toward Central Park and lastly Cinema Tech toward Jeonnam County Governor’s Office.
In the proposed plan, the existing green spaces of the site have been preserved, and the main entrance of the project route has been redesigned in the Central Park route, while the project is borderless and residents are invited to enter from each direction. The micro collage city will play a contemporary, flexible and dynamic personality in the city.
